The RMBI is a charity which has been dedicated to meeting the needs of older Freemasons and their dependents from the English Constitution for over 155 years. The Institution was established in 1842 when Grand Lodge inaugurated the Royal Masonic Benevolent Annuity Fund (Male), the Female Annuity Fund being started in 1849. The following year, a home at East Croydon was dedicated and the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution (RMBI) was established. From these relatively humble beginnings, the RMBI has become one of England's major charities, offering a wide range of services to meet the growing needs of the Craft.

The RMBI has two principal objectives, namely the provision of residential and nursing care and meeting the needs of older Freemasons and their dependants by payment of an annuity.

The Institution's aim is to enhance the quality of life for all those who enter our care. The RMBI currently has 19 homes which accommodate over 1,100 residents. Our homes are situated throughout the country and offer a full range of residential and nursing care. The RMBI also offers sheltered housing and caters for those with special needs (Alzheimer's disease) - for the past two years, the RMBI has been market leader in providing care for the mentally frail. The Institution is currently expanding its services further by developing a pilot home in Yorkshire for a small group of people with mental handicap/learning disability.

Our homes are in Hove - East Sussex, Oadby - Leicestershire, Cramlington - Northumberland, Chislehurst - Kent, Stisted  - Essex, Fulford, York, Wokingham - Berkshire, Porthcawl - Mid Glamorgan, Llandudno - Gwynedd, South Croydon - Surrey, Eccles - Manchester, Lytham St Annes -Lancashire, Great Cosby - Liverpool, Bury St Edmunds - Suffolk, Bournemouth - Dorset, Exeter - Devon, Watford - Hertfordshire and Hindhead - Surrey. As well as providing permanent care in our homes, we are also able to offer short stay breaks for those living alone or with families, so relieving families of the often burdensome task of caring for an elderly relative.

We also provide annuities to over 2,300 Freemasons and their dependants. The maximum rate at present if £1,040 per annum, and an additional payment is made to each annuitant at Christmas by way of a gift. These payments, which substantially improve the quality of life for the recipient and do not affect statutory benefits, cost the Institution in the region of

£2.5 million per annum. A limited number of holidays are also provided for our annuitants at 4 seaside resorts across the country.

To help local lodges and to provide a more personal service, welfare visits are made on a regular basis to each prospective resident and the Welfare Teams, led by a Welfare Team Co-ordinator, are able to provide residents with advice and suppod whenever required.

The Institution has a daunting challenge - to provide a comprehensive range of services to meet the needs of an increasingly large number of elderly Freemasons and their dependants from the English Constitution. It faces this challenge with enthusiasm and vigour, with professional staff balancing the needs of business-like efficiency with a commitment to the spirit of Freemasonry. Ultimately the Institution is here to help you. Please contact the Institution on the telephone number or address shown at the top of this page, so that we can provide more information on our services.
